Strandingsmuseum St.George

Distance: 32.33 Km

Strandingsmuseum St. In 2019, George received the European museum award "The Silletto Prize" for his strong local roots and communication in a captivating way.

Strandingsmuseum St. George i Thorsminde on the edge of the North Sea conveys the story of strandings and shipwrecks on the rugged west coast of Jutland and in the North Sea and contains, among other things, many thousands of finds from the wreck of the English warship HMS St. George, who, together with HMS Defence, ran aground on Christmas Eve in 1811 off Thorsminde. Almost 1400 sailors perished when the two ships sank.

The many exciting finds from the wreck - cannons and handguns, gold coins, musical instruments, wine bottles - give a fantastic impression of life on board in 1811. Dive into the stranding stories and experience how the violent events affected the coastal population.

Through scenography, sound, light and film, the story is conveyed in a new and different way. The design of the museum is based on the ship HMS St. George, and the museum is, just like the ship was, 59 meters long and has three floors, just like the ship had three decks. Through the museum's three floors, the 5,4-tonne rudder stands as a central focal point, which with its scent of tar and sea helps to draw the sea and the experiences underwater in the basement, where the light is blue, and you see wrecks and salvage methods.

Round off the visit with a shopping trip in the museum shop, enjoy a cup of coffee with a view of the sea and the harbour, and let the children loose on the outdoor maritime playground.

Strandingsmuseum St. George is particularly suitable as a place to visit for bus companies with the option of a guided tour. The museum is also handicap-friendly.
